Reflections on the importance and impact of family on the workplace...

As October rolls around, it's become our tradition to make the journey to East London to visit my family during our boys' school break. Is this easy to do? No. Is it always fun and drama-free? Also, no. But family, with all its messy complexities and perfect imperfections, is a fundamental part of our lives.

It’s these relationships that mold us most, challenge us, and play a pivotal role in shaping who we are all becoming. In my case, my parents and siblings have had a profound impact on my life.

I'll admit, I wasn't always the easiest child to raise, and I didn't always appreciate what my parents gave me. I think every generation faces its own set of trials and tribulations, and has to wrestle with its own blind spots and blinkers.

My parents' generation had to strive for economic emancipation, and they did everything they thought was right to ensure we received a good education and had the opportunities they were denied. At times though, this came at the cost of intimacy and presence. During my younger, more rebellious years, I often found myself being judgmental of their parenting decisions. I felt that age-old feeling that follows most youngsters: I felt so misunderstood!

Yet as I've grown older, and become a parent myself, I've come to view my upbringing (and my parents’ role in it) with less skepticism and far more deep affection and gratitude. In this article, I want to reflect on the profound significance of family, not only in our personal lives but also in our professional journeys.

  1. Family Values Are The Firmest Foundation

Our upbringing forms the core of our character and values, influencing not only our personal lives but also our professional endeavours. It's very often within the family that our moral compass is set (or skewed). The values instilled during our formative years often become the guiding principles that help us navigate life's challenges, including those we encounter in our careers. From my own parents, I learned virtues like service, kindness, respect, and empathy.

  1. Family Dynamics: Great Practice For Workplace Challenges

Most family dynamics include a unique blend of personalities, opinions, and backgrounds. It’s within the family, that we first encounter a rich fabric of diversity and complexity... it’s where we learn how to argue, debate, fight fair, resolve conflicts, see other perspectives, wait our turn, forgive and ask for forgiveness. These dynamics, while sometimes challenging, teach us invaluable lessons in patience, compromise, and understanding. They prepare us to face the diverse world beyond our home, including the complexities of the professional environment. In the workplace, similar to family dynamics, we often encounter diverse personalities and opinions. The skills we acquire in understanding and working with family members can be applied to build effective workplace relationships, leading to greater professional success and fulfillment.

  1. Unconditional Love Leads To Professional Growth

Loving without any or limited conditions, as we try to within our families, can extend to our professional lives. Stay with me here – I know you’re thinking I’m now going too far – but striving to love unconditionally (everyone – not just our loved ones) fosters a sense of security and acceptance that is incomparable in the workplace. Think about it: when we feel supported and valued, we are more likely to take risks, pursue growth opportunities, and achieve professional success. We’re less likely to take things personally and more eager to collaborate and continue to learn as we go. The lessons of unconditional love within the family remind us of the power of support in reaching our goals. Of course, practically loving without conditions is a virtuous pursuit, and almost impossible. But we can aim in that direction at least. Just try – see what happens...

  1. The Glue That Holds Society (and Business) Together

Family isn't just the center of our personal lives; it's the glue that binds society together. Strong families nurture responsible citizens, instill moral values, and foster social cohesion. Of course, these values and social bonds extend to the business world – it’s not soppy sentiment, its statistically proven. Companies that prioritize a familial culture, that emphasize respect, support, and unity see higher levels of employee satisfaction and increased levels of productivity. In this way, a positive workplace environment that mirrors the values of a healthy family can contribute significantly to professional success and corporate growth, which is incidentally great for society too... it’s a never-ending cycle!

So friends, in a world where change is constant and influences are abundant, let the value of family remain a steady source of strength, love, and identity in your life - both personally and professionally.

It's where our values take shape, where we embrace diversity, and where we test our capacity for unconditional love. Family is not just a cornerstone of our personal lives; it's the very fabric that holds everything together.
